Poll worker after a long day: ‘This is what democracy is all about’ (Your Letters) – syracuse.com

To the Editor:
“This is what democracy is all about.” Those were the last words that Sam yelled at us as we walked across the parking lot outside St. Lucy’s gym. It was almost 10 p.m. Tuesday night and we were poll workers — Democrats and Republicans — who had just finished a 17-hour shift on Election Day 2021.
I believe that democracy is more than voting. It is also struggling to understand arcane ballot propositions. It is knocking on doors and making phone calls. It is talking to candidates at political gatherings. It is respecting each other across the political divide. But most of all it is getting involved in a positive way in the political process. Remember what Sam said: “This is what democracy is all about.” And may I add that without it, our democracy will die.
