Let’s take a moment to visit Republican La-La Land. It’s just around the corner from the land Dorothy and Toto danced through years ago after a tornado swept through Kansas.
It’s a land where facts don’t matter and truth was garbled by a riot in Washington on Jan. 6. For a brief time, American people were shocked and dismayed by the violence that vandalized our Capitol.
Even a politician on the right, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, was astounded on Jan. 6.
“This failed insurrection only underscores how crucial the task before us is for our Republic,” he said. “Our nation was founded precisely so that the free choice of the American people is what shapes our self-government and determines the destiny of our nation. Not fear, not force. But the peaceful expression of the popular will.”
“Criminal behavior will never dominate the United States Congress,” McConnell added. “This institution is resilient. Our democratic republic is strong.”
Republicans tried to overturn election results and have launched a campaign of new voter-suppression tactics to destroy elections they disapprove of.
Former President Trump — who may yet run again and is allowed to continue to lead the Republican Party — tells a national audience that the United States “will not survive” because of election crimes that exist only in his mind. And Trump is fully supported by the Republican Party.
Is our democracy at risk? Yes.
