Storm Lake is fortunate to have good and earnest candidates for city council and school elections in November. The City Beautiful will miss Councilmen Jose Ibarra and Dan Smith, who are stepping down. Candidates to replace them are Maggie Martinez, Matt Ricklefs, Shane Schreck and Dylan Wolf Tornabane. They’re great people interested in making Storm Lake better. We’re lucky to have that caliber of person on the ballot. We are grateful that Mayor Mike Porsch will run for another term. Porsch is a nice guy, the main qualification for the job. He listens, qualification No. 2.
Likewise, the school board has two seats up for election. Our thanks to Board President Peter Steinfeld, who is stepping down. He helped navigate the most difficult of times for schools during the pandemic and did a masterful job. Board member Erika Dierking is running for re-election. Also running are Steven Mills, a Spanish professor at Buena Vista University, who might come in handy. Or Ashley Wolf Tornabane, who has worked in the trenches as an instructional aide. It’s hard to go wrong with choices like these.
In Alta, Jim Eaton is running against Mayor Kevin Walsh. For Alta-Aurelia School Board, there are five candidates for two seats. It’s hard to say that people are not engaged around here these days. It’s a good sign that people care deeply about their communities, and remain willing to volunteer for the cause and not for themselves.
