Letter to the editor: Confederate monuments belong on battlefields – The Winchester Star

After reading that The Winchester Star plans to publish a special section on Shenandoah Valley Civil War battlefields, coupled with many recent articles about the removal of monuments of Confederate Civil War heroes, it struck me that the two naturally belong together.
Many of those monuments are majestic pieces of art. While it has been deemed inappropriate to give them places of honor in public squares, the people they portray were present in those battlefields. Their likenesses would be more at home there, and they would certainly add to the historic aura of the sites many in our community have worked so hard to preserve.

Tolerant? Why should we be. The overwhelming suffering caused by southern plantation living of the enslaved is beyond terrible. Why should we be tolerant? It is historical fact. Overwhelmingly sad. Cruel beyond description.
These Confederate groupies need to study real history where husbands and wives, parents and children were ripped from each other and sold on an auction block. I wonder how they explained that one in their little so called Christian churches.

“Tolerant? Why should we be.” Isn’t “tolerance” one of the defining “virtues” of the modern liberal? I’ve noticed with today’s liberal they are all very tolerant. Until you disagree with something they say or express an opinion that doesn’t agree with their hive think. One need only look at these comments to verify my statement.

Mr. Incredulous, fine if you disagree. When you are prepared to have your own child sold into slavery, never to be seen again, we can have a conversation. Until then, don’t suck up for validation.

[thumbup] They pore over everything with a microscope and hold everyone to an exemplary, zero tolerance standard… except themselves.

Poor widdle guy… so mediocre

Anyone keeping score? I feel humbled by the tolerant and all-knowing.

Seems many folks have grown tired of covert racism being passed off as someone’s “heritage”. If your heritage is hate and treason, abandoned it and create a better heritage.

Like that white liberal girl that claimed for years to be black? Or maybe you have Pocahontas Warren in mind, who lied on her college application about being Native American to get in. Cool changes, huh?

Yikes… so desperate…

Thank you, Mr. Brown, well said. We can’t be responsible for the actions of every one of our ancestors. We all have the good, the bad, the scalliwags, the heroic, and the saints.
We are only responsible for our own actions. Romanticizing the Confederacy is not a positive action. I have a 20th century immigrant in my family and I could belong to the Daughters of the American Revolution through 2 branches of my family. I am not so naive to think that through my very long ancestral history there was not a slave owner. I honestly don’t know and, now, it doesn’t matter.
Now, I stand for racial equality and a diverse America. We are not a “white” country and have never been. Like every human that stepped on our shores, we came from someplace else.

Put these American swastikas in the bottom of the ocean or bury them in the confederate cemeteries with the rest of those losers. Give it up. These were not honorable people or an honorable mission. These statues represent treason, continued slavery and Jim Crow tactics…nothing honorable about any of that.

The
The Civil War is long over. Statues don’t teach anything, they are there to honor. Let’s display them the same way N-zi statues are displayed in Germany……

The same people defending Confederate traitors supported Donald Trump, another traitor. They are the scum of the earth and if you meet one in person, remember that they hate all the freedoms you have. They are the American Taliban, bent on destroying the multicultural history of this country to make Hand Maid’s tale a work of non-fiction. These people hate America, they hate religious freedom if the religion in question is not their radical right wing interpretation of the Bible. They would kill you if they had to in order to protect their white supremacist views of democracy. They are a danger to society, so be careful and avoid them in public, in the workplace, in the classroom, and in public. They are full of hate and love their guns more than Jesus, a dangerous combination. They will one day once again try to overthrow this country, they just tried on January 6th. We must all wake up or we will be under a right-wing dictatorship just like Afghanistan.

[rolleyes] the hysterical musings of the padded room faction.

I love how Trump damaged them so emotionally that he lives in their heads to this day. Probably need to get a rubber room ready for them when he comes back.

Most germans still focus on what hitler tried to do. Only the less intelligent ones put their heads in the sand.

No, Mr. I, Trump didn’t damage me. He has threatened and damaged our democracy and that’s even worse.

[thumbup][thumbup][thumbup][thumbup]
Chris knocked it out of the park. You have recognized the enemy to democracy and the United States of America…..these confederate supporting white supremacist want authoritarian white rule of the is nation, the same as the so called South wanted. They will not succeed.

What? Does the truth hurt? Trump, his toadies, and other trash tried to overthrow a legal election and take over a democracy that he no longer led. They are undermining our elections and our democracy. That is truth. If you are a patriotic American, why would you support such a threat to our country?
Answer the question.

Let’s bring history a little more current: in Normandy where are our dead warriors lie, would we want to be honoring German soldiers, have statues of German generals or leaders? After all, they did fight on the same battlefield.
That’s how ridiculous those who keep pushing the “glorious” confederacy sound like. There is nothing glorious about the confederacy. It was the cause of death, suffering, and destruction.

I don’t think the French would go for that after being occupied for five years

Of course not, Mr. I. Americans wouldn’t allow it either. Can you even imagine a statue of Hitler and his generals overlooking our honored dead? That thought makes me ill.
This Confederate nonsense is no difference.

The difference is that the Confederacy never occupied another country. Try again.

I don’t have to “try again.” They started a war that killed so many only the numbers the pandemic dead are close. They lived in a false world of glorious heroics, fluffy bunnies, and pretty butterflies fully aware of the great misery, torture, and death suffered by those enslaved. The enslaved supported the wealthy life style of plantation owners and the economy that embraced that life style.
It was all about money. Nothing glorious about that.

[thumbup][thumbup][thumbup][thumbup]

You want the whole story? I would suggest you open history books and study. That’s where the Confederacy belongs. We can learn about our history without viewing the unpleasant or tragic parts as heroic.

Some say the southern people were traitors. Hmm… then I think all of our ancestors were traitors, beginning with the American revolution-fighting for independence from England. These statues can open the doors to education. Being selective as to what should remain and what should be gone is individual opinion. So the new statute of Emancipation is okay??? It only explains half the story. I want the whole story so it isn’t repeated..

Stop it …you want to repeat this lost cause nonsense. That’s why you voted for the dumbest president in the history of this nation. The racist, sexual predator lying tRump. You white supremacist really have a problem with the truth, don’t you.

The issue started with Ms. Styfco’s first sentence/paragraph and the phrase “Confederate Civil War Heroes.”
The Confederacy is not something to celebrate and the individuals who led a war and are responsible for over 600,000 dead Americans are not heroes.
Ms. Styfco and others like her wish to immortalize racism and slavery as romantic. I would suggest she watch the first episode of “The Underground Railroad” and tell me how romantic that is.

The hallowed grounds of our memorialized battlefields are good places to re-display the historic works of art that honor excellence in martial American leadership.
The many local soldiers’ monuments serving as headstones for the fathers and sons who never returned home, are a more difficult solution to find an appeasement for. They are best left where they stand/stood, town squares and courthouse lawns from which they enlisted, bade farewell to loved ones, and marched off to answer their State’s call to arms to defend against invasion.

Perhaps, liberals don’t like racism and slavery portrayed as heroic. At least we’re honest about it.

Perhaps those that study history and strive to understand the men and moments honestly don’t care what intolerant emotions you have.

Real historians don’t get emotionally attached to monuments.

[thumbup][thumbup][thumbup][thumbup]
You will never get truth and honesty out of these right winger. They thrive on lies and division. Look at this past presidential election and January 6, 2021. Their covert and overt racism has driven them crazy with hate.

does any other “civilized” nation let the losers worship “civil war” battlefields like the white supremacist do here? just asking. I find it kind of amusing watching grown men play war …. it’s so Neanderthal…..LOL

The National Wallace Monument near Stirling Scotland

wow..That’s a real stretch. Is Scotland an independent nations…one thinks not and I have never heard of England recognizing the wallace monument

No one has a father or son who died in the Civil War. These people cling to romantic pieces of fiction that didn’t happen.

[smh] so much righteous cause myth, and so little curiosity.
“Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and for a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, – a most sacred right – a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government, may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can, may revolutionize, and make their own, of so much of the territory as they inhabit. More than this, a majority of any portion of such people may revolutionize, putting down a minority, intermingled with, or near about them, who may oppose their movement.” ~ A Lincoln 1848
“I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” ~ A Lincoln (1858)
“I will add to this that I have never seen, to my knowledge, a man, woman or child who was in favor of producing a perfect equality, social and political, between negroes and white men.” ~ A Lincoln (1858)

How many slaves did Lincoln own? and the great Lincoln was wrong about many things but he never owned slaves nor did he ever take up arms against the United States.

Lincoln like all men/women was flawed. Is that your point?

If there is a “confederate” monument to Lincoln for his support of slavery and treason, take it down or place it in the cemetery of the other confederate losers.

We get it: you are desperately afraid of change. So, please tell us: What other country celebrates the second place team in a two-way race? Or open armed rebellion against the US?

[rolleyes] oh thank goodness, pajama boy has opined with predictable worthlessness.
I’ll take “What are American Indians” for $500. Move along junior.

The problem with that idea is that liberals are never happy, until you’re not happy. Even now, there are attempts to remove statues from the battlefields themselves. All headed up by liberals, of course.

You are correct, appeasement only emboldens. Everything is incumbent upon “authorities” executing their duties, enforcing laws, and prosecuting criminal acts.
That said the Generals are already down and sitting “in storage”. Better to stand on the battlefields than languish in the obscurity of government theft.

Yes, slowe, the Confederacy does not deserve monuments but should be studied in history books and by our schools.
The big question is why are we even talking about this? Racism and bigotry should never be celebrated.

Your expressed juvenile comprehension of history belabors the systemic failings and myopic intolerance of public education.

Blackhorsegirl ….you are so on point! These insecure victimized white nationalists need these “statues” like a baby needs their “blinky”…. it pacifies them. Well enough already, grow up! Face the truth. America then like now has some really bad people. Let’s not celebrate mean, nasty, treasonous people or behavior.

Wow, big words! Fling nasty comments at me all you want. I have tough skin. I, also, notice that not one of you conservatives has defended Trump’s efforts to overthrow a safe, secure, and legal election, his surrounding himself with individuals encouraging martial law and using the military to overthrow a democracy, his pressure on the Vice President to do the same, Trump’s encouragement of the January 6th Insurrection resulting in deaths, (let’s not forget the “kill Mike Pence screams”) and his continued efforts to undermine our elections and our democracy as a whole.
Still waiting for it.

happy…surely you jest. Again, move the statues to the confederate cemeteries with the rest of those losers.

A law should be passed to prevent any more land being “preserved” to mark the shame of the Confederate attempt to secede from the Union in order to preserve and continue the white Christian practice of enslaving Africans for their labor and abuse. NO MORE HONOR to Traitors. NO MORE Battlefield preservation. Those were shameful times and actions. THey need not be honored but rather remembered as shameful. Never forget but do not honor it.

The secrets of battlefields are neither glorious nor heroic.
They are or should be reminders that thousands died terrible deaths. When does that become romantic?

THe only way these statues of Confederate soldiers are majestic is that they try to make the memory of traitors, fighting to guaranteed the preservation and continuation of enslaving kidnapped Africans honorable. The is no honor in what they did. These statues should be photographed for the history books and then buried, face down in a confederate cemetery Let their shame and the shame of their being erected in the first place be their place in history.
